1. The colors I chose to use were blue, green, and orange, which were pulled out of the pattern papers. I always try to use the brightest and warmest color as an accent or matting piece. Cool colors always work well in the background because they don’t overwhelm your photos.

2. One of the neatest tricks on this layout is the paper saving trick using the merchandise strip. On the right side, the background was actually seamed together on the back by butting the 2 patterns together and then using the cut away strip to mount them together.

3. All of the orange mats were inked with the blue Cats Eye Chalk Ink pad that is included. To ink an edge, simply drag the edge of the ink pad perpendicularly to the edge of the paper. An inked edge lends a distressed or aged look to the paper, and it also helps to “pop” the mat off the background.

4. The ric rack border creates a continuous line across both pages and helps to unify the 2 sides. Always try to unify your layout by bouncing colors and techniques from side to side. In this way, you can get a layout that looks coordinated but not boring.

5. The accent pieces on the layout are all actually icons cut out of the papers. This is cost effective trick allows you to embellish without using anything except the paper!

6. The title technique is called a “title block”. By creating mats for the letters they stand out and have a much greater impact.
